summerLAB 2017

The purpose of summerLAB is to exchange experiences of community work that promote the creative and critical use of technology

Until 30 September 2017

SummerLAB is part of ENCAC, a transnational cooperation project of support, fostering, dissemination and interaction between citizens, artists and researchers interested in visual arts, sound creation and digital culture.

Leaded by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial (Spain) and with LEV festival as strategic partner, ENCAC is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and it is composed of five European cultural institutions and platforms based on EU countries: Ars Electronica (Austria), DISK Berlin (CTM Festival, Germany), Resonate (Serbia), le lieu unique (France) and hTh-CDN (France) plus four non-EU partners: Avatar (Canada), ELEKTRA (Canada), MUTEK.MX (Mexico) and Mapping Festival (Switzerland).

The LABoral’s SummerLAB is dedicated to digital culture and new modes of expression that foster the creative use of technology.

The Lab builds public knowledge of emergent topics in technology and promotes critical understanding of them through practice and public debate.

Through a 2-day programme of workshops, roundtables and installations, the lab will explore creative practice across a range of tools and topics to develop critical understanding and discourse of new technologies. The diverse programme brings together artists, practitioners, academics and experts to discuss and reflect on the issues and challenges to artistic production. From the social concerns of AI to exploring new forms of narrative creation in VR, this year the Summerlab explores interdisciplinary approaches to art production with technology.

In conjunction with these events LABoral will host a roundtable with the ENCAC network participants including CTM berlin, Le Lieu Unique Nantes, Ars Electronica Linz, The Montpellier, Onassis Athens and Semibreve festival.

The programme of events offers practical engagement with new technologies and fosters knowledge exchange and cross-pollination of ideas between artists, industry professionals, students and the wider public.

The 2017 edition of Summerlab is curated by Carmen Salas and Nora O Murchú
