Anatomy of an AI System is a large-scale map and full-length essay that investigates the human labor, data, and global resources needed to build and run an Amazon Echo. The exploded diagram combines and visualizes three core and extractive processes needed to run a large-scale AI system: material resources, human labor, and data. The map and essay examine these three elements over time, represented as a visual depiction of the birth, life, and death of a single Amazon Echo unit.
