‘Art in the Squares’ is a project curated by the La Juan Gallery collective, promoted by LABoral Centre for Art and Industrial Creation and funded by the Caja Rural de Asturias Foundation.
Its main aim is to bring contemporary art to rural Asturias through participatory initiatives, temporarily transforming urban public spaces into cultural laboratories for encounter, collective creation and community dialogue. The project aims to spark conversations about memory, identity, landscape and the participation of the local residents themselves, moving away from self-contained artworks to create artistic pieces in collaboration with local residents.
DATES AND TIMES:
The programme of activities for Arte en las Plazas 2026 will take place over three days in different municipalities:
- CANDÁS – Plaza Jesús García-Prendes, Friday 25 September, from 7 pm to 8.30 pm
- PRAVIA – Plaza Sabino Moutas, Saturday 26 September, from 12.30 pm to 2 pm
- CANGAS DE ONÍS – Plaza Camila Beceña, Sunday 27 September, from 12.30 pm to 2 pm
Over these three days, the squares will be filled with performances, music, live painting and participatory activities designed for people of all ages. It’s an opportunity to experience contemporary art up close, outdoors and as part of the community.
All activities are free of charge and open to all.
PROGRAMME:
The artistic programme comprises five multidisciplinary and participatory installations created by various artists:

DRESSING FOR THE SUN
By Mocholi
A performance inspired by Ocaña’s imagery, in which the artist stands in the square wearing a large white tunic that the audience gradually transforms and fills with colour by hanging satin ribbons on it, bearing their written wishes and memories.

ART NOW
By Verónica Ruth Frías
A performative piece with a strong visual impact and a feminist perspective, in which the artist, dressed in a red suit, climbs a precarious tower of contemporary art books to reflect on the historical exclusion of women in culture.

MEMORY TABLE
By Marta Botas
A collaborative painting created live on a large-format canvas spread out across tables, where the community contributes recipes, ingredients and local memories to celebrate the town’s culinary and everyday culture.

FREQUENCIES AT THE SITE
By María Mieres
A sound experience combining electronic and ambient music, created live using field recordings made previously in the town (such as bells, fountains and murmurs), allowing the audience to interact by triggering these sounds via a controller.

WEAVING THE TERRITORY
By Irene Trapote
A collaborative project that uses physical networks inspired by weaving and fishing to forge links and connections with participants, inviting them to collectively rethink how we live and build community within the Asturian landscape.
