Thibault Jehanne

16 November 2015 – 30 November 2015

A 2013 graduate of the Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Médias de Caen, Thibault Jehanne (France, 1989) works mainly with film, video, installation and sound art. His preoccupation as an artist revolves around the fugitive of images, as evidenced by his works with devices such as webcams, cell phones or films without image.

Thibault Jehanne works by manipulating time, as if it were a material, to experiment with image and sound. He focuses on a line between these two practices, as a permeable border between video art and cinema; music and recording; still images and moving images.

His videos delve into specific moments: the rising tide (Eclipse), a journey (D226) or an apparition (Nuit Americaine). The films make us participants of these moments, revealing situations, contexts or pretexts that draw social or urban landscapes. Scenes that reflect the mundane of life, where boredom and insignificance predominate.

The author tells us how these images are the result of wanderings and walks that led him to the discovery of new forms and movements. Through them he was able to compile a set of documentation and experiences related to his apprehension of the territory.

The discovery of new spaces is for him the opportunity to expand the field of research and, in turn, stands as a necessary component in his creative work. How does one’s vision of the place gradually become familiar? What vision does one have of space after overcoming uncertainty, fear of the unknown or the absence of cultural references?

During his artistic residency, the French creator Thibault Jehanne will travel around Gijón with his camera, interacting with the city to create an audiovisual piece. Winner of the 2014 Video Universe Award, granted by LABoral and the Gijón International Film Festival, as part of the activities that are part of FICXLAB.

Within his peculiar conception of landscape, which transcends beyond mere passive contemplation, it is configured as an entity with which one can interact. His work shows an interest in the vision we can have of a space before its physical exploration. The approach we have when it is constructed only through photographs or stories. And, of course, its gradual discovery (its scale, its smell, its voices…). Therefore, his proposal will focus on how the city of Gijón can be seen through this filter, letting himself be guided by what attracts him.

His new work produced in the city will premiere at the 2016 Gijón International Film Festival and will become part of the Gijón Film Festival Archive, which will be kept at LABoral Centro de Arte for promotional, educational and research purposes.
