Project in residence

Archaeabot

Anna Dumitriu and Alex May will develop a research residency for the development of a prototype underwater robotic installation that explores the meaning of ‘life’ in a post-singular, post-climate change future. Using new research on archaea (a group of single-celled microorganisms) combined with the latest innovations in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the artists will attempt to create a species that will survive the end of the world as we know it. The work is the result of a collaboration with researcher/criomicroscopist Amanda Wilson as part of the MARA project, based at Imperial College and the School of Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.

The residency is part of the first call made by EMAP (European Media Art Platform), aimed at European artists working with new technologies. The EMAP programme aims to promote collaboration between artists and institutions that use these media. LABoral forms part of the platform’s network of members along with ten other prestigious European institutions.
