Anna Dumitriu (1969) is a British artist whose work fuses craft, sculpture and bio-art to explore our relationship with the microbial world, medicine and technology. Anna has exhibited at the Picasso Museum, Barcelona (Spain), the Science Gallery Dublin (Ireland), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (UK), The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Taipei (Taiwan), Waag Society Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Art Laboratory Berlin (Germany), and The V & A Museum, London (UK). His work is part of several public collections, including the Science Museum, London (UK) and the Eden Project, Cornwall (UK). She works in scientific environments and is artist in residence at the Modernising Medical Microbiology project at the University of Oxford (UK), visiting researcher and artist in residence at the Department of Informatics, University of Hertfordshire (UK). Anna Dumitriu and Alex May will develop a research residency for the development of a prototype underwater robotic installation that explores the meaning of ‘life’ in a post-singular, post-climate change future. Using new research on archaea (a group of single-celled microorganisms) combined with the latest innovations in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the artists will attempt to create a species that will survive the end of the world as we know it. The work is the result of a collaboration with researcher/criomicroscopist Amanda Wilson as part of the MARA project, based at Imperial College and the School of Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.
The residency is part of the first call made by EMAP (European Media Art Platform), aimed at European artists working with new technologies. The EMAP programme aims to promote collaboration between artists and institutions that use these media. LABoral forms part of the platform’s network of members along with ten other prestigious European institutions.
