(Gijón, 1982)
Marcos Tamargo is a Spanish visual artist.
His work falls within the tradition of figurative abstraction and material painting. Marcos Tamargo’s work is now part of major collections and has been exhibited at various cultural institutions, museums and galleries.
Trained in painting from childhood, Tamargo completed his artistic education in New York City, where he settled in 2007. He enrolled at The Art Students League and studied at The School of Visual Arts.
It was during his time in New York that Tamargo began to express in his work his interest in landscape and the experience of travel, themes that have been central to his career. This marked the beginning of a process of sublimation of the fundamental elements of landscape: first industrial and urban, later human – Africa – and, finally, delocalised. The translation of this process into the pictorial realm led to an evolution towards the use of an abstract visual language and the incorporation of materials collected during his travels and experiences as an artist-traveller. Landscape and the experience of travel are thus united in his painting.
Tamargo’s work has received very positive reviews from critics both nationally and internationally. Throughout his career, his standing has been confirmed by his exhibitions in galleries in New York, Miami, Canada, Spain and elsewhere. His work now forms part of major collections, such as the National Heritage and The Hispanic Society of New York, as well as various Spanish government ministries. Furthermore, Oviedo City Council has recognised his talent by commissioning him, for five years, to paint portraits of the winners of the Prince of Asturias Awards (now known as the Princess of Asturias Awards). In addition, the paint manufacturer Winsor & Newton currently sponsors his work, having appointed him as the brand’s ambassador in Spain.
