Lourdes Mieres is an Asturian artist born in Madrid in 1957. She holds a degree in Fine Art from the Faculties of Fine Art at San Fernando in Madrid and San Jordi in Barcelona.
She has taken courses in: Illustration at the Faculty of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid; Printmaking and Ceramics at the Gijón Municipal Cultural Foundation; and Ceramics at the Gijón Teachers’ and Resources Centre. She has taught Drawing at secondary school level and is now retired.

My work is figurative, with a surrealist ‘touch’ and a poetic language. It is based on existence, combining reality, nature, geometry and sensuality.

I rarely work on a single subject exclusively; usually, themes and genres overlap. It is difficult to make these classifications, but it is a way of organising my work. The series I have begun so far are: The Colour of Music, Sensual Transparency, ‘Sui Generis’ Still Lifes, Daydreams and Improvisations.

Depicting reality is not an end in itself in my work; it is merely a means of creating my own cosmogony. These are poems ‘written’ with colours and shapes.

Nature, or references to it, is a constant theme in my work. It is an ode to its intrinsic ‘beauty’, to its structure, its textures… leaves, shells, stones, feathers…

It is work with a strong poetic and evocative quality, with a surrealist, dreamlike touch, and imbued with sensuality. At times, it conveys a certain loneliness; there are paintings ‘inhabited’ by a single figure, and there is also silence and stillness, as if the scenes were frozen in time… conveying a very personal perspective. My work has a certain ‘timeless’ quality. Perhaps it reflects a small, almost intimate world.
