In his youth, he first trained under the painter Eugenio Tamayo and later studied Drawing and Painting at the School of Arts and Crafts in San Salvador de Oviedo with the painters Rafael A. Borbolla and Adolfo Folgueras, and Modelling and Sculpture with the sculptor Félix Alonso Arenas and José María Porta de la Lama, also a sculptor and medallist.

Whilst at that school, he enrolled in the specialisms of Decoration and Artistic Drafting, obtaining a Graduate Diploma in both specialisms.
He also obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid and subsequently a PhD from the same institution.
Throughout his artistic career, he supplemented his training with courses and workshops in various disciplines, including printmaking and ceramics. He also travelled to Italy to further his education.

In 1979, he was appointed to a secondary school post as a Drawing teacher, and from that point onwards his artistic activity was devoted entirely to teaching, which he undertook at various secondary schools in Gijón and, from 1975, at the Universidad Laboral, where he spearheaded and managed the creation and development of the Arts A-Level programme, which began in the 1997/98 academic year.

Although perhaps best known as a painter, his sculptural output is also noteworthy, falling mainly into two categories: his work in medals and commemorative plaques, and his public sculptures.
