She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca and studied in Kassel and at the HFG Offenbach in Frankfurt, whilst pursuing part of her creative work, which she continued in Badajoz and later in Asturias, where she took up residence. She completed a Master’s degree in Advertising.
She has served as coordinator of the association ‘La voz de mi madre’ in Badajoz, and of the ‘Motiva’ Graphic Design Conference in Asturias. She has also taken part in several group exhibitions and public art projects.
For several years she taught at the Oviedo School of Art. She is currently a lecturer in Design at ESAPA, the Higher School of Art of the Principality of Asturias. Since 2007, she has been president of the cultural association Laboca. Until February 2018, she was part of the Offmothers collective alongside Susana Carro, Roxana Popelka, Eugenia Tejón, Gema Ramos, Natalia Pastor and Elena de la Puente, which explores themes of art and motherhood.
In her early career, she developed an informalist style of painting that oscillated between figuration and abstraction. In 2003, a fire destroyed all the work she had produced over the previous two years. From that moment on, her practice underwent a significant change.
I no longer focus on a single technique, and above all I have moved away from a very visceral and spontaneous way of working; I now place greater emphasis on the design of the pieces and the conceptual development of the projects. This experience is portrayed in Incendios.
My research has been framed by visual experiences that go beyond the traditional concept of the ‘picture-as-image’, taking into account the sheer number of such images that surround us on a daily basis and the economy of perception in today’s society. I consider myself anti-disciplinary, as this categorisation does not correspond to my work. Over time, I have reconnected with purely pictorial languages, although I continue to explore new media and techniques.
Through my projects, I explore the complexity of being a woman and a mother in a world that often underestimates and subordinates our experiences. My artistic approach is based on the exploration and representation of the realities of the female experience in our society.
