This meeting at LABoral pays tribute to Karin Ohlenschläger’s legacy in Asturias, her contribution to current art and creation in the region, and the professional and emotional mark she has left among us.
Karin Ohlenschläger was the artistic director of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial between 2016 and 2021.
Karin Ohlenschläger (Hannover 1959, Gijón August 24, 2022) graduated in Art History from the University of Kassel (Germany) and worked as a director in different cultural entities: MedialabMadrid, international space for Art and Digital Culture; the cultural management company, Cultural Projects; Alliance Video Art, international video art distributor; and Espacio P, a multipurpose space in Madrid, dedicated to emerging artistic practices. In addition, she held other positions of responsibility, such as President of the first interprofessional association of contemporary art in Spain, the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC), between 2011 and 2012; and President and co-founder of the Banquete Foundation, dedicated to art, technology and society, between 1998 and 2006.
His projects during the direction of LABoral were a reflection of all this knowledge and his desire to open dialogues between various disciplines, spaces and agents; such as the Eco-visionarios exhibition, which opted to put the climate crisis and the importance of environmental care at the center of LABoral’s programming, or When the butterflies of the soul flap their wings, an exhibition that showed the collaborations between art and science to address the challenges of the present.
Also under his direction, the LAB<20 award was created, aimed at Asturian boys, girls and young people under 20 years of age who used technology creatively or AuLAB, schools for the 21st century, which for three years collaborated with 10 Asturian educational centers. to provide new methodologies and tools in the learning processes. Among its latest initiatives was the project Towards an Agropolitan Citizenship, a hybrid proposal that was developed outside and inside the Art Center in collaboration with the artist Virginia López and which aimed to re-articulate the link between the rural and urban environments.
This meeting at LABoral pays tribute to Karin’s legacy in Asturias, her contribution to art and creation in the region, and the professional and emotional mark she has left among us. An act that, just as she requested, does not give rise to sadness, but to songs, dances, gratitude and love.
