Avelino Sala is an artist and editor of Sublime magazine. In 2001, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (BA, Hons degree) in Critical Art Practice from the University of Brighton.
Sala is a leading Spanish figure in art as a vehicle for political resistance. His recognisable aesthetic reinforces a discourse that is as necessary as it is forceful, covering sensitive and relevant issues such as migration, contemporary relocation, the environmental crisis and the paradoxes of capitalism.
Avelino Sala works in the global context of contemporary art, exhibiting and participating in biennials in Caracas, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Bienal Sur, Nomade Biennial in Poland in 2024 and Kosovo, Bienal de Cuenca (Ecuador) in 2022, and Bienal de Trujillo (Peru) in 2024.
His work has been exhibited internationally for 20 years in venues such as Abrons Arts Centre, New York; Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias; Russian National Centre for Contemporary Art, NCCA, Moscow; Matadero, Madrid; White Box Art Centre, New York, among others.
Notable solo exhibitions include Riot Paintings (Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York, 2017), Beyond Words (Galería ADN, Barcelona, 2021) and Nadie es una isla (Malta Biennial, 2024). He has also participated in key group exhibitions such as Good Trouble (WhiteBox, New York, 2020), Dialecto (CA2M, Madrid, 2021) and Transversia at the Dakar Biennale (Senegal, 2022), confirming his presence on the global contemporary art scene.
Sala has received various recognitions and awards, such as the Artport International Video Award granted by UNESCO and the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2007, the scholarship from the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome in 2010, and the Barjola Prize for contemporary creation in 2022. In 2024, she represented Spain at the Malta Biennial with a solo project in the Spanish pavilion.
She maintains a continuous presence at international fairs with the galleries that represent her, including ARCOmadrid, Zona MACO, and Art Brussels, among others.
