Meraki Cia. is an emerging contemporary and urban dance company, based in Asturias, Spain, and made up of dancers from different disciplines, whose aim is the search for a common language.
Meraki, from the Greek μεράκι, refers to “the soul, creativity or love put into something; the essence of oneself put into the work”.
As a collective, Lucas García, who comes from bboying, and Paula Castañón, who comes from hip hop and contemporary dance, try to investigate the exchange between these disciplines. By analysing their similarities and differences in their approach to movement, their intention is to create their own innovative vocabulary.
The dance company Meraki is in residence at LABoral to produce their piece Amalgama, in which they address the union between flamenco, contemporary dance and urban dance, a dialogue that aims to break down the limits between these disciplines. In this way, a conversation is created between the different constructions of each performer, producing a language in which, while preserving the essence, the pure origin of the movement is no longer exactly recognisable.
