TouchDesigner Workshop

This activity is held within the framework of the LEV Festival and is part of the ENCAC Network (European Network for Contemporary Audiovisual Creation) activities programme, a multi-year project, led by LABoral Centro de Arte, and co-financed by the Creative Europe Program of the Union. European.

TouchDesigner is a real-time development platform for the creation of live sound, visuals, interactive systems, mapping and immersive environments. The workshop aims to equip participants with fundamental knowledge and techniques to immerse themselves in a visual programming environment, focusing on audiovisual installations and device control.

It is aimed at students, artists or anyone interested in using TouchDesigner and its multiple applications, at a beginner level.

Most lessons will have a practical orientation.

No prior knowledge of the subjects covered is required, although it would be good to have had some type of contact with TouchDesigner before attending the workshop.

We will try to answer all questions that arise, so if you have a device of any type that you want to connect to TouchDesigner, you are free to bring it.

Day 1: April 25 / 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Overview of the interface, operator families and workflows in TouchDesigner
  • Making noise
  • Sound-reactive particles, rendering and compositing

Day 2: April 26 / 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Mapping tools in TouchDesigner
  • 3D Instancing, Kinect and point clouds
  • DMX control

Day 3: April 27 / 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

  • Case study: Maotik

The workshop will be taught entirely in English, although there will be the support of a Spanish technician during the delivery of the workshop for those attendees who may require it.

Hardware needs:

Attendees must bring a Mac or PC with TouchDesigner099 pre-installed and configured. If you do not have it, you can use a PC available in the room.

Taught by: Markus Heckmann, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is the technical director of Derivative, the creators of TouchDesigner. Since 2006 he has worked on countless commercial and artistic projects, both in important amusement parks and in artistic installations, in live visual projects for musicians such as Plastikman or Alva Noto or in the development of comprehensive control applications for audiovisual installations. In addition to designing and developing projects, Heckmann is dedicated to promoting TouchDesigner and giving workshops and conferences about its infinite applications and uses in the professional field or for the artistic community.

Case study: Mathieu Le Sourd(Maotik), Canadian artist who bases his work on the creation of generative multimedia and visual environments, developing his own visual tools for them by creating animations from algorithms and 3D worlds that transform the perception of space. His work has been presented at several festivals around the world such as Live Cinema in Rio de Janeiro, the Plums Festival in Moscow, Visiones de Lima, Mutek Festival in Mexico or at the British Film Institute in London.
