I recount work sessions by Susanna Tesconi

Publication date: 24th april – 3rd may 2012

Dates and times
Work sessions with teachers: April 24 and May 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. Work session with students from IES Rey Pelayo, Cangas de Onís: May 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Residency objectives
Research on fabLAB as a pedagogical resourceDevelopment of teaching materials that can be used in the classroomAll participants work with curricular diversification students and are involved in the school dropout prevention program, coordinated by the Diversity Attention Service, Educational Guidance and Participation of the General Directorate of Academic Planning, Organizational Autonomy and Innovation of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Principality of Asturias.

Development 1st session

The objective of this session was to know the expectations of the participants in the group, everyone is looking for alternative educational tools and approaches that allow them to work with their students. After Susanna’s presentation and a summary of a dynamic presentation of the cluster. The activity consisted of representing the professional evolution and relationship with technology throughout the life of each participant” represented in the structure of an impossible machine.

Below are some of the ideas that emerged from this activity:1. Teacher training & technologySelf-taught trainingFeeling lost in the gears of technology.Technology that lacks ethics, that does not seek to improve people’s lives but rather promote consumerism and non-sustainability.Identification of technology in the most basic devices

2.Education & use of technology The use of technologies is a fundamental part of any person’s life and should be used in the classroom and the school curriculum. Design of specific technologies for school or educational use. Learning by doing: currently everyone knows how to read (computers and other devices) but no one knows how to write (only programmers know codes). Being a creator/designer of technologies allows you to invent the tools that are needed. Laboratory idea not only as a physical space but also as a mental dimension (research space, search for exchange resources…)

3.Use of technology at school: Is classroom technology the same as that used by students in their personal lives? The teaching technology is very poor and boring compared to that for personal use. How to unite both technologies? Can technologies be used to teach anything?

Introduction to the concept of digital manufacturing and fabLAB
From a simple presentation video, we define what digital manufacturing is. From machines equipped with numerical control software (CNC), a new paradigm is established in manufacturing, computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM technology) that turns objects into physical what only existed in a computer file. The machines capable of materializing these objects from this project are essentially: cutter, milling machine and 3D printer, which is the basis of a Fab Lab (digital manufacturing laboratory.

After a visit to the fabLAB, the group can begin to propose a specific activity within the framework of the laboratory that is prepared in the next work session (Thursday, May 3) and will be tested with students on May.

Concepts worked during the session
1. Process of evolution from industrial to digital and personal manufacturing, which allowed a democratization in the use of technology.2. Importance of a deeper knowledge of technological language, which allows dialogue with experts and technicians to develop tools and a truly transversal use of ICTs.3. Change from the idea of market to that of community: the design of an object is shared, the community of users improves it and adapts it to personal needs.

Development 2nd session May 3
The objectives of this session were: Analyze the educational implications of digital manufacturing laboratories through the development of projects and teaching methodologies. Proposal for an activity in the fabLAB to test with a group of 15 curricular diversification students from the IES Rey Pelayo de Cangas of Onis.

An analysis of possible difficulties was established at two levels: – Type of student (diversification and risk of dropping out) Lack of interest, concentration and poorly learned basic skills Exclusively recreational and social communication use of technologies Absenteeism from school

– Situation of the teaching community Curricular autonomy: despite having freedom to develop their educational programs, meeting the objectives makes it difficult for them to get out of the classroom routine and work in another way. Lack of training in the use and possibilities of new technologies majority have self-taught training). Job insecurity / work overload

Establishing the guidelines for the development of an educational program in the fabLAB framework: – Interdisciplinary work designing a common project between several teachers of different subjects (instead of compartmentalized areas), ensuring that this project works on the contents and meets the objectives of the program. – Project co-design work with a fabLAB technician, to ensure that the curricular objectives and technical possibilities of fabLAB are met. – Specific training for teachers and an approach from non-educational institutions to the daily reality of the classroom, combined with a change in mentality of the teaching community: possibility of “departing from the pre-established script”. – Search for a common language between technicians and teachers.

Within the framework of the creation of teaching materials for teachers, the design and production of furniture adapted to students with special needs was also considered. A very interesting proposal that may have to be returned to at some point in future collaboration.

Session design with the students of the IES Rey Pelayo de Cangas de Onís:Interests and motivation of the students: mechanics, right now they are working on a collaborative project, designing the electrical circuits of a house. In class, they are also working on energy resources.Susanna’s proposal: session on the production of wind and water turbines for the production of electricity. Creative design will be worked on on computers, 3D printing of blades, the production of electronic circuits and assembly and construction. Computers, the 3D printer and the laser cutter will be used.

The group will self-document the activity by producing audiovisual content, working on the importance in the field of digital manufacturing that projects are documented and can be shared with the community.

To make the result of the prototype produced in the fabLAB clearly visible, perhaps they can test the effectiveness of the turbines in a project that the group of students is developing at the school.
