Presentation: Helena Torres. Serendipity

31th march 2012

A locative audio project developed in the “Spatial Narratives” residency at LABoral.

Serendipity, by Helena Torres, is a work produced at LABoral, after being selected within the framework of the Spatial Narratives program, promoted by Platform 0. Production Center, in collaboration with SAT-Société des Arts Technologiques (Montreal), No Tours (Vigo ) and GPSmuseum (Murcia), around locative audio and its narrative possibilities.

The work is a fragmented story recorded on sound tracks located in the El Sucu cemetery, inaugurated in 1876, which proposes the resolution of a crime that occurred in Gijón at the end of the 19th century. The drift through this space, configured by current traces of past events, suggests an approach to the political, social and historical climate of early modernity to generate a historical point of view of the present. This sound “walk” has the voice as its narrative axis by Margarita Simona, a historian specialized in feminism who is writing a thesis on the figure of Rosario de Acuña. During her investigation, she discovers an unsolved crime that occurred in Gijón in 1895. It is about Edgardo del Pozo, a symbolist painter protected by the Count of Goncourt, with whom she is said to have a love relationship. Del Pozo’s body is found in his mansion in Gijón by his fiancée, Gemma Oldman, a Catalan anarchist and defender of women’s rights. Through radio and newspaper news, quotes, poems, fragments of interviews, documents of the time and Margarita’s story, passers-by experience a sound drift that proposes the articulation between past and present, presence and absence, reality and fiction .

The artist will present the project at 5:30 p.m. at LABoral.

Activity subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Government of the Principality of Asturias
