Nicolas Bernier. frequencies (light quanta)

28th august – 26th october 2014

28 August 2014 – 26 October 2014

Project result Nicolas Bernier’s residence in the Sound LAB

frequencies (light quanta) is the latest audio-visual installation by Montreal sound artist Nicolas Bernier developed during his residency at the Sound LAB at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in August 2014. The selection of the artist in residence and the exhibition of the work produced is a proposal joint by the LEV Festival and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial.

Putting forward his ever-growing fascination towards science, light, and basic sound generation process, the artist is here pursuing his research by focusing on the quantum — the smallest measurable value of energy. The whole project is based on the possible conceptual relationships between basic quantum physics principles applied to the audio-visual creative process: particles, probabilities, wave/particle duality and discontinuity. Structured around these notions, the audio-visual composition stems from 100 sound and light fragments that develop themselves aleatorically, generating an ever expending but yet disruptive form in time and space.

As photons (or light quanta) are emitted by electrons, one can think of the installation’s electrical sounds signal as being the trigger of the light signals. The sound composition relies fundamentally on the use of micro sounds and “clicks” which is the shortest audible sound that human can ear. The architectural structure of frequencies (light quanta) is a poetic reading of those machines and electronic circuits that bring a better understanding and visualization of the infinitesimal world.
