The city we are

15 May 2026 – 19 September 2026

The city we are is an exhibition-based exploration of the Rutas Urbanas project, an initiative developed by geographer David Alonso, in collaboration with LABoral Centro de Arte, comprising walking tours of the city of Gijón and its surroundings. The aim of the tours is to explore, observe and contextualise the architecture, history and urban development of the municipality. This experience has given rise to the ‘Apadrina un edificio’ Association, a collective with an interest in the city’s architectural heritage that has sought to convey its concerns through this exhibition.

Both the tours of Gijón and the exhibition call for a shift in how the city is perceived by those who live there. It is urgent that we learn to look, to listen and to feel the space we inhabit in order, on the one hand, to highlight the value of our heritage and, on the other, to identify needs and engage with the city’s inevitable evolution. Both tasks must necessarily stem from a knowledge of the city itself. This exhibition is, therefore, an invitation to rediscover our urban space.
