Rodrigo Cuevas

The grace of folkloric agitation

17 May 2024 – 18 January 2025

An exhibition that brings together the audiovisual and neo-folkloric creative universe of the acclaimed artist, winner of the National Prize for Contemporary Music 2023.

Rodrigo Cuevas’ musical trajectory demarcates the contours of an authentic folk-trans agitation currently underway in Asturias, the agitation of rurality, of ruralities, of an eroticism of the relationship with the world that has the potential to regenerate us mutually. Full of complicities, of multiple vital plots intertwined in the very medium of the affective, the musical and artistic praxis of Cuevas speaks to us of a future that excites and incites us, that encourages us to return to the transformative potential of fun and desire, of courtship, of play, of celebration, etc. as sophisticated techniques for the healing and (re)animation of the spirit. More than a problem of representation or identity(ies), the folkloric agitation proposed by Cuevas speaks then of an exercise of vital transformism, a transformism turned into a principle of regeneration as a politics of metamorphosis in the midst of a troubled world. The result of a multidisciplinary research work and of theoretical and practical collaboration with Cuevas himself in the exploration of his trajectory, this research experiments and converts the key points of his compositional anima into a series of ethnographic/experimental devices.

Those who attend this exhibition will be invited to delve into the depths of the Cuevas universe, but they will not come out of it unscathed. For, as the also agitator Vinciane Despret taught us, there is no way to decently pass on a heritage -an inheritance- if not through the always creative exercise of mutual transformation. This exhibition, therefore, honors, with Cuevas, the theory and practice of transformism as a force of libidinal inquiry for the ontological regeneration of a world in the process of change.
