Nel Amaro

5 May 2021 – 10 July 2021

Exhibition of works by the artist as part of the Selmana de les Lletres Asturianes 2021 programme.

Nel Amaro (Quentuserrón, Mieres, 1946 – Oviedo, 2011) is a (marginal) (iconoclastic) (multidisciplinary) (avant-garde) member of the first generation of Asturian literary Surdimientu. He cultivated theatre, poetry, narrative, mail art, video creation and performance. He published in Spanish (Habitación de poeta; Boca arriba, lentamente naufragando; El banquete) and, above all, in Asturian (Antígona, por exemplu; ¡Adiós, Dvorak!; Pruebes d’autor; Cementeriu cívicu; ¡¡¡Falanxista!!!; Entós, cuando ñevaba). He edited fanzines, promoted meetings of mail art and visual poetry, and has participated in international meetings of poetic action.

This exhibition basically brings together three aspects of his creative career: visual poetry, mail art and video creation. He dialogues with basic, almost discarded materials, with the codes of advertising and mass audiovisual culture, and mixes classical techniques with constructions that escape, sometimes even bordering on bad taste. Ten years after his death and almost seventy-five years after his birth, the Selmana de les Lletres Asturianes 2021 [Week of Asturian Letters] pays tribute to an unrepeatable artist.
