Concept
Throughout 2009, four artists from Asturias visited Guadalajara. Later, four Mexican artists visited Asturias (and completed a residence at LABoral). This exchange gave the artists a chance to acquaint themselves with the local reality, to interview agents from local social movements and organisations with first-hand experience in dealing with the issue of migration. On the completion of the field work in which the art world cooperated with the Third Sector, the artists produced a piece in which they reflected on what they had seen and experienced.
Alegorías de la Migración [Allegories of Migration] is the exhibition based on the projects produced over the duration of the programme. Selected by the curator for their nomadism, the artists engaged in a reconstruction of their work grounded in metaphorical migration, underscoring the allegory of a journey imposed by critical conditions, in turn rooted in the political organisation of present-day societies. Working with action art, video creation and installation, they advocate new ways of symbolically speaking to the alterity of our time. From a perspective eschewing all spectacularity and ambiguity in addressing the problems affecting our social systems, this exhibition is akin to a symbolic exchange of the places where these artists live, showing specific projects that reflect on what is still proper to art today.
