Introduction
The OSVF is the world’s first nano video festival.
A one-second film festival held online and managed by a program-algorithm created for this purpose called DEEP DREDD (which receives its name from the fusion of DEEP BLUE, the computer that defeated Kasparov and of JUDGE DREDD, vigilante character in the comics magazine 2000 AD).
DEEP DREDD, in addition to managing the festival – ordering the films, communicating with the authors, etc. – is the sole judge, choosing the festival winner under its own criteria.
The festival was born with several intentions, to question the relationships we have with technology and information, to create a particular community of creators and to have a good time.
Before the creation of YouTube (2004 BYTB) ADSL had begun to allow the transmission of large files, it was the opportunity for moving images. Image and audio were already part of the data exchanges, but video was not. It is at this time that video festivals of 10 minutes, 5, 3, until reaching the minute began to proliferate: paradoxically, broadband allowed the transmission of increasingly smaller videos.
We studied this technological contradiction and resolved it by creating the ONE SECOND VIDEO FESTIVAL. A festival that enables as much as it impedes, that calls for massive and democratic participation but that demands unusual creative abilities. In this way, degree zero, or actually level one, of the narrative was reached. Was there anything left to tell from the second?
Just as happens at the nanometer scale, the properties of small-scale video change: electrical conductivity, heat, resistance, elasticity or reactivity, giving rise to an enormous amount of narrative energy.
Organized by: Colectivo Respeto total (www.respeto-total.com).
