The latest of Annabel Howland’s large cutouts is an evocative and dynamic photographic collage many metres in length. The cut-out images of waves on the ocean evoke an imaginary landscape populated by a series of visual elements that are as elaborate as they are innocently abstract. Cut into shapes reminiscent of topographical landmarks, searching for the virtual geometry of map markings, Howland’s images of a restless, restless sea take on the almost dreamlike form of a vast mountain range in which waves and wakes become slopes, snow, peaks and trails.
