Video-Film Concert is a restored collection of rare early works by Nam June Paik and collaborator Jud Yalkut. Marked by a playful sense of improvisation, these seminal experiments include pioneering examples of mass media appropriation and manipulation as cultural critique, irreverent performance, electronic image processing and unexpected film-video interfaces. The groundbreaking Video Tape Study No.3 is a direct media intervention, as Paik manipulates footage from news conferences by US President Lyndon Johnson and New York Mayor John Lindsey. In Waiting for Commercials a deadpan compendium of Japanese TV commercials, Paik appropriates television imagery as pop cultural artefact. Several pieces feature Paik’s early experiments with electronic image manipulation, prior to his development of the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer.
