This large-format photograph is part of the Órbita photographic and cinematographic project.

Orbit tells of an artificial solar system whose activity revolves around a dying star. The inertia of the system is such that the planets continue to orbit around it despite the fact that the gravitational force has long since ceased.

Through metaphor and a retrofuturist aesthetic, Kela Coto tries to approach a classic theme, industrial photography, but with a more subjective intention than the hegemonic “new objectivity” that dominated photography in the 20th century. Thus, far from creating typologies of any kind and with a clear nod to science fiction films, Órbita explores concepts such as progress, cultural heritage or the feeling of belonging.

Just like the planets around the sun, the economic, social and political structure of Asturias orbits dependently around the heavy metal industry. This analogy suggests understanding ourselves as a dying solar system whose main star no longer provides the heat and energy it once did, yet whose gravitational inertia continues to keep all the planets orbiting around it with no possibility of taking any other course.

This fascination with industrial brutalism is tinged by the current questioning of progress. Everything is bathed in a fragile halo of admiration. Heavy industry is a forced inheritance turned here into aesthetics through a personal gaze and point of view.
