Polluted Images is a tool that translates air pollution data, often opaque due to economic interests, into easily decipherable visual codes.
The interface takes information from the network of public environmental measurement stations and adds it to the “real” image of the site in the form of visual effects, thus creating a sort of augmented reality. This visual information is closely related to the nature of the pollutant or the effects it has on the human body.
The degree to which and the way in which the data affects the image is determined by the exposure limit levels for each pollutant according to the World Health Organisation.
In this sense, Contaminated Images makes the air we breathe visible.
