Marta Fernández Silverio

1 May 2023 – 31 January 2024

Marta F. Silverio, a journalist by vocation and training, was born in Gijón in 1997. She studied Journalism and Humanities in Madrid from 2015 to 2020. In 2018 she completed a year of exchange in Brazil, at the Universidade Federal da Bahía, where she reconnected with the concerns that had led him to choose a career in journalism, such as connecting with people, discovering distant realities and understanding the current world.

The confirmation came after the 2020 confinement, when he carried out his first practices at the RTPA. The following year she searched for all possible opportunities to continue training as a journalist and finally, after several courses and jobs in corporate communication, she agreed to an internship in La Nueva España. In the midst of the pandemic recession and without many clear future prospects in Madrid, she decided to stay in Xixón, breaking other certainties (such as that she would not live in Asturias again until old age). And while he is debating between possible paths for the future, they contact him to carry out a project in October 2021. That project would be the seed of 12grados, which finally took on a life of its own in February 2023.

Revista 12 grados

Revista 12 Grados was born to offer a sustainable alternative to journalism. Although we carry out other communication tasks, our central axis is 12grados.com, a local media in Gijón that works with an innovative business model: ‘The desired advertising’. It consists of a website without advertisements and without paywalls, that is to say, that anyone can consult for free and without interruptions. Furthermore, we respect the user’s privacy because we do not use cookies.

To finance its publication we will use advertising, but in a different way. Readers who want to support us can subscribe for free and will receive a weekly ‘La Publiletter’ with advertising content from local businesses, from Xixón or Asturies that pay a fee depending on the number of subscribers who receive it.

The digital media is focused on a young audience, from 18 to 35 years old, and although the content is generalist, environmental and cultural information is prioritized, always with a feminist and anti-racist approach, seeking to deepen the information, moving away from the dictatorship of the last minute.

Our objective during the residency is to implement the model of “The Desired Advertising” and to achieve sustainability, understanding this to mean that the advertising income serves to maintain all the publication costs of the medium.
