Adam Basanta (1985) is a sound artist, composer and performer of experimental music. His work includes sound installations, electronic and experimental chamber music compositions, site-specific interventions and laptop performances. He develops his creative work in diverse disciplines and media, exploring the intersections between the conceptual and sensorial dimensions of listening, the materiality of technological devices and the instabilities of instrumentality. His sound installations have been presented internationally in galleries, festivals and institutions and have been recognized with several international awards.
Gil Delindro (1989) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives between Porto and Berlin. His work, which straddles two countries in film, sound, installations, performance and field research, bridges different media, addressing concepts such as animism, memory and post-digital conflicts. Delindro works primarily with raw organic elements and self-created analog processes, creating a very physical, direct and powerful sound work that evokes an imaginary land as concrete as it is imaginary. His work has been recognized with different awards and has been shown in countless places, from rural areas in Africa and Europe to museums and institutions in Toronto, São Paulo, Marrakech, New York and especially in Europe. His artistic practice is based on continuous field research in isolated places.
Project in residence
Permafrost is a layer of the earth, including rock or soil (cryotic), whose temperature is at or below the freezing point of water.
In this project, freezing is a conceptual way to “hold” matter in time. The different time containers are separated and displaced in space – time is the main reference of the work. Fragments of frozen waste fall continuously onto a platform equipped with sensors and transducers. This acts as a receiver connected to software that interprets the impact, time, weight and displacement of the waste. As the piece evolves the matter accumulates on the platform generating not only a sculptural arrangement, but unpredictable reactions in the software and an ongoing percussive composition.
Permafrost proposes a landscape of organisms playing with time, an unstable geography that moves from observation of the natural landscape, to realms of real-time data and organic manipulation. Notions of movement, instability, memory, decay, chance and contamination.
The artists propose an instrument that can be fixed neither in space nor in time, only manipulated throughout its existence: the duration of the piece will depend on the fragmentation process.
Gil Delindro will focus on the experimentation and observation of the different pieces of frozen earth, which will be created using different types of soil detritus. Forming a new diverse ephemeral landscape. Adam Basanta will focus on creating a unique software that will carefully analyze the development of the piece, generating sound waves that will be shaped through different data such as weight, disposition and timing of the falls of the material.
This piece falls between the boundaries of live performance, installation, sculpture and musical instrument, but will always be an ephemeral presentation.
Permafrost has been selected in the II call for residencies of the European Network of Contemporary Audiovisual Creation (ENCAC), led by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial with the collaboration of LEV Festival as a strategic partner. More than 180 projects from 34 countries were submitted to the call.
