Sonya Isupova

Sonya Isupova (Ukraine, 1994) is a visual artist and researcher currently based in Geneva. A graduate of the Estonian Academy of Art, she completed a master’s degree at HEAD’s Department of Space and Communication in Geneva. Isupova’s work seamlessly merges art and design, as she creates machines that collaboratively produce art.

Her current projects delve into the themes of post-coloniality, territoriality and the dichotomy inherent in map-making in an uncertain world. Specifically, she focuses on the development of machines around maps and map-making processes. Her work explores the complex relationship between humans and machines, remote sensing infrastructures and their inherent limitations.

Isupova’s research on mapping processes seeks to detect the changes in the landscape that occur on a daily basis due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Her work, Mapping Uncertain Landscape received an honorable mention from the S+T+ARTS Prize Ars Electronica.

Artist included in the exhibition Digital Machines: Technology, Industry, Society with the work Mapping Uncertain Landscape.
