Born in Madrid, Daniel Canogar has spent his life and career between Spain and the United States. Photography was his first medium of choice, and he obtained an MA from New York University and the International Centre of Photography in 1990. He soon became interested in the possibilities of the projected image and installation art. His practice seeks to understand the immense impact of technology on society, culture and the human psyche.
Ever since he first stepped into a photographic darkroom as a teenager, he has been fascinated by the interplay between light and shadow, an almost alchemical ritual that remains present in his work to this day. Initially engaged with a ‘post-photographic’ discourse, his work reimagines the expanded field of the photographic image. Whether experimenting with fibre optics, scanning piles of discarded technology or weaving generative algorithms into visual tapestries, his practice explores the intersection between photography, technology and installation art. His career has taken him to the most unexpected places: from marvelling at ancient Peruvian textiles in the Amano Collection in Lima, to collaborating with scientists in cosmology and biology, and exhibiting in spaces as diverse as a salt mine in Portugal, a panoptic prison in Montevideo or the LED screens of Times Square.
Throughout his artistic career, his work has been driven by curiosity, playfulness and an insatiable desire to unravel the complexities of contemporary visual culture.
He has exhibited at major museums and galleries around the world, including LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the Prado Museum in Madrid, The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. His public art installations include *Vértice* (2026), the first outdoor digital artwork created specifically for the city of Madrid, installed opposite the Press Association on Calle Juan Bravo; *Shuttle* (2026) at Red Sea International Airport; and *Dynamo* (2021), an audiovisual project commissioned specifically for the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020. His works are also part of prestigious museum collections, such as LACMA, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Beyond his artistic practice, Daniel Canogar is a committed educator. Since 2010, he has been an associate professor in the Architecture Programme at IE University in Madrid and teaches on the Curatorial Studies Programme at the University of Navarra in Pamplona. In 2024, he was appointed a permanent academic member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, Spain.
