Alberto López Cuenca

Alberto López Cuenca holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Autonomous University of Madrid. His areas of research are contemporary theory and cultural history, especially that of mass and digital media, from a perspective informed by the philosophy of language and technology, as well as cultural commons and non-exclusive forms of authorship and ownership, and creative work and its manifestation in urban geography. He has contributed to international academic publications such as Afterall, Third Text, Critical Arts, Culture Machine, Social & Cultural Geography, City, Culture and Society, and Revista de Occidente, among others.

He has co-edited five volumes on contemporary cultural practices and authorship: Intellectual Property, New Technologies and Free Access to Culture (2008), Do you want to save the changes? Intellectual Property and Digital Technologies: Towards a New Social Pact (2009), From the Private to the Common (2019), Beyond Copyright: Other Terms for Debating Intellectual Property (2022), and Notions in Common: Towards a Glossary for Liberating Culture (2024). He is also co-editor of Creation Today: Posthumanist Perspectives (2018) and author of The Digital Commons: New Ecologies of Artistic Work, published by the Centre for Digital Culture in Mexico City.

He has been a visiting professor at Columbia University (New York), Goldsmiths, University of London, and the Complutense University of Madrid. He has taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as at the Ibero-American University (Mexico City), the National Centre for the Arts, also in Mexico City, and the University of the Americas, Puebla, where he was Postgraduate Coordinator and Coordinator of the Doctoral Research Group in Creation and Cultural Theories.

He is a member of the academic or editorial board of SOBRE. Artistic and political practices in publishing at the University of Granada, Aisthesis. Chilean journal of aesthetic research at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Ornitorrinco Tachado. Visual arts journal at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, and Klastos. Research and cultural criticism, a collaboration with the LadoB portal. He has been a critic and reviewer for Revista de Libros de la Fundación Caja Madrid, in the cultural supplement of Diario ABC in Madrid, as well as in Mundonuestro, LadoB and Animal político. He is currently a full-time professor-researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and a collaborator at the A.
