Xixón Fabuloso

27 September 2026

Every tour we set out on aims to help us learn a little more about everything we encounter in our everyday surroundings – in the city where we live, work, visit or simply stroll through. And we do so through the little stories behind each building. We’ll look at some of the distinctive features of architectural styles (Classicism, Eclecticism, Modernism, Regionalism, Art Deco, Rationalism, Autarky, the Modern Movement and Developmentalism), as well as the social, economic and cultural factors at play at each stage of Gijón’s development and growth. We’ll look at its urban planning advances and setbacks, the processes that led to the city’s growth and, in particular, how all of this has come together to create the distinctive and unique geography of Gijón’s urban and rural landscape. We’ll explore Gijón at street level.

We’ll set off from Plaza del Instituto at 6 pm.

No prior registration is required.

This activity forms part of ‘Rutas Urbanas: exploring Xixón and its buildings’, a project conceived and led by geographer David Alonso.
