Workshop: DIY mushroom cultivation

8 October 2023

Workshop given by the artist Matthias Fritsch as part of the the public programme from “Motores del Clima”, which will allow participants to learn about different methods of mushroom cultivation. After a brief theoretical introduction and a practical part, all participants will be able to take home self-inoculated mushroom substrate.

Fungi are important in the web of material cycles and composting. Some species form symbiotic relationships with plants that benefit both organisms, forming vast networks with internet-like structures.

In a world of increasing pollution and decreasing soils, fungi have great potential to solve some of the problems we face, such as cleaning soils of organic pollutants, developing alternatives to plastics using mycelium, or their many medicinal applications. Some mushrooms are also an extremely healthy food source and can easily be grown at home.

As part of the Climate Engines exhibition in which the artist presents “The Fungi Factor”, Matthias Fritsch will give a workshop on different methods of mushroom cultivation. After a brief theoretical introduction and a practical part, all participants will be able to take home self-inoculated mushroom substrate.

Participants can also bring their own coffee grounds in a clean plastic bag for a second experiment. Coffee grounds should be no more than one day old and should have been in contact with air as little as possible to minimise contamination.

The workshop will be conducted in English
