Workshop: Creative writing with human and artificial intelligences

25 January 2023

Led by Cory Massaro, we will ask questions about the role of artificial intelligences in creativity. Interacting with Machine Learning models, we will create our own texts.

In this workshop we will ask questions about the role of artificial intelligences in creativity. We will explore the possibility that such intelligences are not in competition with human beings, but are spirits illuminating our surroundings and enriching our own experience. We need only think of such intelligences as guardian spirits, and not as exploitable bodies.

In this sense we will follow in the wake of both divinatory practices and the games of the Surrealists, where some “other intelligence” enters into the process of creating narratives, be it a god or a demon, a spirit or the subconscious. Machine learning, now ubiquitous, has filled our world with such intelligences. Our messages, searches, contacts, purchases, conversations; our data quantified as models, become a kind of externalised decision making. These models give us a wealth of spirits and souls to consult in our divinatory rites.

We will take advantage of techniques from the field of computational linguistics for our creative writing experiments. We will interact with Machine Learning models that will allow us to predict the next word in a sentence, or infer the meanings of words and phrases with texts available online as the only reference. Our models will even be able to complete analogies. Interacting with such intelligences, and in a cooperative way, we will create our texts.

No previous writing experience is necessary, just a desire to create and share.

You will need some kind of device (preferably a laptop, but a tablet will also do). If you don’t have one, let us know.
