On 20 March, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., we encourage you to participate in the workshop ‘Translating poetry: an experience of mutual verbal hospitality. Translation as welcome,’ held as part of POEX 2026.

Led by Aurora Luque, winner of the National Poetry Prize, this workshop invites participants to reflect on poetic translation from an open and creative perspective. Far from the idea of the translator as a ‘traitor,’ the workshop understands translation as a form of welcome and dialogue between languages, authors, and eras.

Based on Aurora Luque’s personal working method, structured in four phases, practical exercises will be carried out with texts by Homer, Sappho, Posidippus, Renée Vivien and María Lainá. In addition, different translation strategies present in versions already published by leading literary translators such as Agustín García Calvo, Anne Carson, Selma Ancira and Salvatore Quasimodo will be reviewed and analysed.

This is an opportunity to approach poetry from within and discover translation as a space for shared creation.

Aurora Luque is a poet, poetry translator and Doctor of Classical Philology from the University of Salamanca. Her most recent poetry publications include Las sirenas de abajo. Poesía reunida 1982-2022 (Acantilado, 2023), Un número finito de veranos (National Poetry Prize 2022) and Gavieras (2020, Loewe Prize).

She has translated ancient Greek poetry (Poemas y testimonios de Safo, with six editions since 2004; Grecorromanas. Lírica superviviente; and the anthologies Aquel vivir del mar. El mar en la poesía griega, and Los dados de Eros. Antología de poesía erótica griega). She has also translated French poets such as Louise Labé and Renée Vivien. In 2010, her translation of Catullus Taeter morbus. Poems to Lesbia was published in Mexico. In 2020, Vaso Roto published her translation of Anne Carson’s If not, Winter. Fragments of Sappho.

No knowledge of Greek is required to participate.
