CANOPY: New architectures through material innovation

Until 26 March 2021

The “CANOPY” workshop aims to create a panel, as a covering structure, with a design bioinspired by the pattern of organisms in Nature (such as the veins of plant leaves), using modeling tools. and advanced manufacturing. The course is structured in two parts: design and manufacturing.

The first part will address the design process from biomimicry: we will discover different structural patterns in Nature and we will learn to transform this inspiration into a design, experimenting with the generation of organic shapes and geometries.

In the second part, the created design will be materialized: we will address the technical implementation by studying the subtractive manufacturing processes, the operation of the cutting machines, as well as the preparation of the file to send to manufacturing (basic level). At the end of the course, attendees will have acquired knowledge about how to innovate in design, through biomimicry and laser cutting technologies to modernize the creation and production processes.

Marlen Lopez, after graduating from ETSAC in 2008 (including an Erasmus scholarship, IUAV, University of Venice in 2005-06), studied a Master in Biodigital Architecture, ESARQ, UIC, Barcelona in 2009, developing the final thesis: “Emerging biodigital architecture “. In 2017 he presented his doctoral thesis “Living architectural envelopes that interact with their environment. Naturalizing the design”, at the Department of Construction Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Oviedo, obtaining Cum Laude and with International Mention by the UCL , London.

Throughout twelve years of experience, as an architect and researcher (in the private and public sphere), she has developed several architectural projects and research projects, and has gathered more than 300 hours of teaching, publications, presentations and conferences at international conferences. . In addition, she has been part of different exhibitions and has received awards.

She currently works as a biodigital architect at Volumínica Studio and a researcher of experimental biodesign processes at Laboratorio Biomimético, both companies founded together with the designer Manuel Persa in 2016 and 2020 respectively.

The course is preferably aimed atstudents and professionals of Engineering, Architecture, Art, Product Design and Industrial Design.

He is co-founder of three startups from the University of Oviedo: VORTICA (generative design), PIXELSHUB (serious games) and TRIDITIVE (3D printing). In 2018 he launched the MediaLab chair with the support of the Gijón City Council.
