Art and neuroscience: relations between the micro and macro scales of the brain

28 November 2020

Reflections on the confluences between the electrochemical signals of the brain, and of other non-human species, and the cultural manifestations of the social environment. Based on research related to the works Beyond human perception and the interactive installation Exocerebro, the authors will reflect on the different scales and biochemical and cultural manifestations of mental activity. The exo-brain is thus a metaphor for the mind, a kind of extension of consciousness. It expands and is present in the form of cultural prostheses, such as writing, art, music and all kinds of symbolic structures.

Speakers: María Castellanos (artist), Alberto Valverde (artist) and Lara + Coto (artists), moderated by Luz Mar González-Arias, coordinator of the HEAL research group: Medical and Environmental Humanities, and professor of English Philology at the University of Oviedo.

María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde (uh513), began working as an artistic duo in 2009. María Castellanos is an artist. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo. As well as on the creation of complex inter-species communication systems that promote understanding between humans and plants.
