Pipilotti Rist

Artist

Born in Switzerland in 1962. Lives between Los Angeles and Zurich

Pipilotti Rist is known for her exuberant video works, multimedia installations and immersive environments in which she explores female sexuality and media culture, remixing fantasy and the everyday. In the 1980s and 1990s, Rist made a series of short video shorts in which she subverted the music video format to explore the female voice and body in popular culture representations, fusing rock music, electronic manipulation and performance. The aesthetics of Rist’s video-creation are inspired by television and advertising, but also by the rich history of feminist video practice. Her production is marked by her critical view of the intertwining of pop culture and desire. Pipilotti Rist was born in 1962 in Grabs, Switzerland.

Rist has had solo exhibitions at, among others, the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; MoMA-The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Kiasma Museum for Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Musée des Beaux Arts, Montreal; Luhring Augustine Gallery, New York; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
