Leslie Thornton

Artist

Born in the USA in 1951, lives in New York.

Leslie Thornton. Modulated by the use of archival material, texts, found footage and dense soundtracks, Leslie Thornton’s rigorously experimental work in film and video explores the production of meaning through media. The creator of several large open cycles of film, video and installation environments, Thornton herself has written: “I see myself as writing with media, and I situate the viewer, not as a consumer, but as an active reader”. In her enquiry into the aesthetics of narrative form and the politics of the image, Thornton forges a unique syntax of rare beauty that both critiques and at the same time bewitches and confounds.

Born in 1951 in Knoxville, Tennessee, Leslie Thornton currently lives in New York. Her films and media art works have been shown at such significant institutions and events around the world as MoMA-The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the international film festivals of Rotterdam and New York; capcMusée, Bordeaux; Pacific Film Archives, Berkeley; and the festivals of Oberhausen, Graz, Mannheim, Berlin, Austin, Toronto, Tokyo and Seoul, among many others.
