Juan José Pulgar

Artist

Born in Gijón, 1971

Graduated in History of Art from the University of Oviedo in 1994. Between 1999 and 2001 he took further studies in Artistic Photography at the School of Art in Oviedo. He works directly with the recovery of memory, returning over and over again to places where events occurred, battle fields newly populated by tombstones to the victims, almost bucolic landscapes in whose soil terrible stories and buried, frontlines that were mute witnesses to conflict and the deaths that took place in them, resituating the victims in the place with his photographs. History and Photography are coupled together in images that recover snapshots of the past and contrast them with new meticulously framed shots from the same viewpoint. He has won awards such as the 7th Astragal Prize, funding for art production from the City Council of Gijón’s Municipal Foundation for Culture in 2006 and 2008, and the Muestra de Artes Plásticas del Principado de Asturias in 2006.
