Avelino Alonso

Avelino Alonso trained musically at the Oviedo and Madrid Conservatories, with his most relevant teachers being E. Truan, P. Braña, J. Labrouve, J.L. Rodrigo and P. Gaudí. He further studies with A. Gonzalez Acilu, J.L. Villa Rojo, F. Chaviano, Electo Silva, C. Prieto and Walter Koenig, with the latter at the Institute of Sonology at the University of Utrecht. In 1981 he founded the contemporary music group Quasar GEM, with which he performs numerous concerts throughout Europe.

Avelino Alonso, as a composer, has been awarded a scholarship by the Council of Europe, the Principality of Asturias and the Provincial Council of Cuenca.

He has worked at the Institute of Sonology of the University of Utrecht, with a scholarship from the Council of Europe on the occasion of the European Year of Music, and in the Electronic Music Office of the Cuenca Conservatory, as a guest composer.

He has directed the contemporary music group Quasar GEM, the San Antonio choir, the Renaissance music group Gorgias Consort, the Rosario Acuña Women’s Choir and the Luís Quirós Choir.

He is currently director of El Coro de las Otra Voces and is working on a doctoral thesis on Philosophy of Music directed by the professor at the University of Oviedo J. A. Méndez.

Projecto 20 21

“Projecto 20 21” It is the fourth installment of a series that began with I. H. V. H. for flute alone;, continued with 84.2 for flute alone and percussionists, continued with 84.3 for flute alone, percussionists and choir; and will conclude (for now) with a work for percussionists and voice, treated electronically.

The work will combine the random, the unfoldable in a field of possibilities, with what has been fixed in advance. What was previously recorded, with what was performed live from an open score, susceptible to various readings. A musical work in the open field.

The percussion scheme will start from shamanic, repetitive and stubborn rhythms. Its counterpoint will be small percussions emanating from materials extracted from nature (stones, seashells, sand in tubes…) and also from the corporeality of the performers (body percussions). The voice will be treated as an emanation of timbres and sonorities, of coloraturas in the form of points and flowing lines.

It is the body (the voice, the percussions) that dialogues with the immediate – the natural – (the percussion instruments made with wood, gut, rattles, sand, stone, air…), to become trapped in a digital file, as of fossil in amber… But it can always return and dialogue with what “now is”, the musicians in full live performance. A game with time.
