Annie Sprinkle has been researching and exploring sexuality in all its glorious and dirty forms for over 35 years, and has shared her findings from the very beginning by producing and actively participating in her own porn film production, photographic work, teaching workshops and lecturing at universities.
She is also an acclaimed performer who tours the world with her theatre pieces and visual art shows, usually based on her experiences of life, sex and love. Annie is also an active campaigner for the rights and health of sex workers and was a pillar in the pro-sex feminist movement of the 1980s.
In 2002 she earned her PhD in Human Sexuality, the first porn star to do so. Her autobiography Post Porn Modernist is an avant-garde cult classic. Another of her books, Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance, won the 2002 Firecracker Award for best alternative book. His latest book Dr. Sprinkle’s Spectacular Sex. Makeover your love life was her first self-published self-help book.
Annie’s current main project is the Love Art Laboratory (loveartlab.org) where she works with her partner Elisabeth Stephens to develop a new idea together: sexecology.
Her unique work has achieved international recognition, and evoked heated controversy, both in the underground art world and in the mainstream cultural scene. She has been hailed as a true “feminist revolution” by the likes of social philosopher Camille Paglia and artist Lydia Lunch. Considered a role model for a new generation of feminists, she has been the subject of a number of serious studies on performance art, and several doctoral theses.
