Leonor Escanciano, “Nora”

2026

(Bilbao, 1964)

Born in Bilbao, with her botxito always close to her heart, Nora now lives and creates in Gijón. Both cities are shaped by the Cantabrian Sea, which has moulded her, driven her forward and instilled in her the tenacious, defiant spirit that she brings directly to her way of seeing through the viewfinder. After years devoted to commercial and social photography, she now enjoys the absolute freedom of creating without labels. She photographs for the sheer pleasure of connecting with her surroundings, seeking out landscapes and the people who inhabit them, both in rural settings and amid the powerful presence of architecture, industry and mining elements deeply rooted in both her origins and her present. She avoids artifice and complex postprocessing preferring to remain faithful to reality and allowing technique to give way to the emotion of everyday life.

The images presented here entitled Rastros de Tránsito and Geometría mineral (Traces of Passage and Mineral Geometry), emerge from her fascination with processes, with how things are made, and with the unseen side of industrial activity on the docks. The first work evokes a home inhabited by rust, a space where accumulated dust traces the marks of job and the passage of time upon concrete. In the second, she focuses on the order of lines, gravity and the friction of raw materials, and on the subtle natural world that quietly finds its way through despite the presence of iron.

She doesn´t seek to offer a postcard image of the port or provide predetermined answer. Her only objective with this diptych is the encourage viewers to pause before what usually goes unnoticed, to look behind the scenes and to experience something of the same story and energy she felt when pressing the shutter.
