(Gijón, 1972)
Architecture influences its surroundings, and this is also true at the Port of El Musel.
For Adolfo Fernández, inspiration is more important than documentation. Based on this premise, he conceives this photograph as a reflection on the relationship between the landscape and the port, seeking to show it from a different perspective.
Fernández has always viewed and photographed El Musel from the outside, especially from Gijón, his hometown. However, during his fieldwork, what caught his attention was the reverse perspective: how Gijón looks from the port. Thus subverting the workshop’s title, Views of the Port, he decided to optically bring the city closer to the port. Because the city is also viewed from the port.
His creative process usually leads him to control every aspect of each project, but tackling the photo shoot in a single day—under specific lighting conditions and with such limited time—proved to be a real challenge. This immediacy required him to set aside the analog format he typically uses for his personal projects and adapt to the flow of the digital camera, incorporating surprise and improvisation as creative tools.
Throughout this creative process, sharing workshop and fieldwork with fellow artists allowed him to see how different photographs emerge from the same subject, reminding him that the framing is dictated by the gaze, not by the camera.
