As a contribution to the understanding of weather modification and environmental control, “Earth Creation” explores the persistent modern trope that the future is manageable. Following a year-long documentary investigation, the film traces current efforts in China and Southeast Asia to predict the future of Earth’s increasingly alien climates in the shadow of attempts to control land and territory. A gulf opens up between the lived experience of overwhelming uncertainty and the mass of data collected to capitalise on this instability. Life on the ground does not match the infrastructures of observation and management on a planetary scale. Weather and climate become geopolitical. The film takes up these themes and subverts the idea of knowledge, opening up spaces of disorientation within the paranoid structure of totality.
