Visualising Sound opens a weekend of presentations and activities this Friday with which LABoral celebrates its fifth anniversary
A concert by .tape. + Fernando Gutiérrez and Kangding Ray will provide music for the exhibition opening from 9 pm onwards. The Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial will also show three other artistic projects of its own production: ‘Serendipia’ [Serendipity] by Helena Torres; ‘Concierto fotosintético’ [Photosynthetic Concert] by Paula Pin; and ‘El arte y su sonido’ [Art and its Sound], coordinated by José Manuel Costa
The inauguration of Visualizar el sonido [Visualising Sound], at 8 pm this Friday 30th March, opens two days of intensive activity at the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón with which LABoral celebrates its fifth anniversary.
Curated by the Asturian artistic collective Fiumfoto (Cristina de Silva and Nacho de la Vega), Visualizar el sonido aims to explore the synthesis between image and sound, the different graphical and physical representations of sound, and its evolution in the context of contemporary art. The exhibition, produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón, is supported by the Instituto françés [French Institute] in Bilbao, by Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council and by Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura [Laboral City of Culture].
Through the work by ten artists, the exhibition is aimed at generating dialogue between all the pieces that have been drawn together, spanning a century of creation centred on the same idea or concept: to dominate the wave, represent and tame it, and the need to go beyond the place where our senses have brought us, which is, after all, the essence of all art. The Centre’s Mediateca Expandida [Expanded Mediatheque] will be showing the works by Pascal Broccolichi, Andreas Nicolas Fischer & Benjamin Maus, Andy Huntington/FABRICA, David Letellier, Daniel Palacios, Lucía Rivero, Daniel Romero, Semiconductor and Zimoun. For its part, the Iglesia de Ciudad de la Cultura [Church of the City of Culture] will host the spectacular installation rheo: 5 horizons by the Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa. The opening times to see this artwork will be: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 12 noon to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 8 pm; and on Saturday & Sunday, from 11 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm.
And as part of this line of work which LABoral will address in all of its programming throughout 2012, that of sound, the day after tomorrow, Friday, the Centre will host a concert by Fernando Gutiérrez and .tape. and Kangding Ray, who both are also part of the exhibition. The Asturians will present their piece Rapsodia [Rhapsody], a proposal selected for the ABC stand at ARCO 2012; while David Letellier, aka Kangding Ray, will deliver a live audiovisual performance with OR a/v live set.
Also on Friday, at 7 pm, the artist Paula Pin will present her work Concierto fotosintético [Photosynthetic Concert], which she has developed at LABoral during her artist residency at Plataforma 0-Production Centre. This project received the Artistic Production Incentive award of the Vida 13.2, Art and Artificial Life International Awards, held by Fundación Telefónica [Telefonica Foundation], in its 2011 edition.
On Saturday 31st, at 1 pm, Helena Torres will show Serendipia [Serendipity] at the Ceares Cemetery. This is a locative audio work that puts together a fragmented narrative, recorded on sound tracks located at the El Sucu cemetery, with the objective of embarking on a sound walk which will solve a crime committed in Gijón at the end of the nineteenth century.
From 4 pm on Saturday, at Patio Sur [South Yard], ecoLAB organises the Spring Planting, an activity aimed at children and families to celebrate the new season. And from 5 in the afternoon, the Centre’s Chill-out area will hold El arte y su sonido [Art and its Sound], a proposal by LABoral, coordinated by José Manuel Costa in collaboration with Juanjo Palacios. Its goal is to capture the sound of an art centre. In this first session, José Manuel Costa will present the project and lead a theoretical session, which will be followed by a round-table debate on sound art with the participation of Oscar Ávila, Pascal Broccolichi, Fiumfoto, Horacio González (the escoitar.org collective), Las CasiCasiontone & Mind Revolution, Rafael Martínez del Pozo, Juanjo Palacios, Daniel Palacios, Ramón Prada, Lucía Rivero, Daniel Romero, Helena Torres and Benjamin Weil.
