The jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Arts, the first of eight international prizes awarded this year by the Fundación Príncipe de Asturias [Prince of Asturias Foundation], will visit LABoral tomorrow, Tuesday. The visit to the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón is scheduled for 8.15 pm, at the close of the first day of meetings in which they will deliberate on the 39 candidates of 25 nationalities that go in for this Award.

The Arts Award is given to an individual, group of people or institution whose work in architecture, filmmaking, dance, sculpture, music, painting and other artistic expressions make a significant contribution to the world’s cultural heritage. In its 2012 edition the prize is endowed with 50,000 euros, a sculpture expressly created and donated by Joan Miró for these awards, a diploma and accreditation insignia.

The jury, which includes LABoral’s Director of Activities Benjamin Weil, will announce their decision at midday on Wednesday 9th May, and is also formed by the director of Museo del Prado [Prado Museum, Madrid], Miguel Zugaza; the publishers Carlos Fitz-James Stuart Martínez de Irujo and Hans Meinke Paege; filmmaker José Luis Garci; film producer Enrique González-Macho and Italian architect Benedetta Tagliabue. Also forming part of the jury are music critic Guillermo García-Alcalde, the former president of Técnicas Reunidas José Lladó, the Minister for Culture of the Principality, Emilio Marcos Vallaure, the former director general of Bellas Artes Benigno Pendás, and the philosopher Amelia Valcárcel.

At the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, they will tour the works which make up the Visualizar el sonido [Visualising Sound] exhibition, an international group exhibition with pieces that reflect on the relationship between image and sound, the influence of the avant-garde on contemporary creation, and the new artistic trends emerging at a global level which involve audiovisual culture.
