The Asturian electronic music group Fasenuova, Óscar Mulero and the collective Fium and Gijón-based experimental musician Pablo Und Destruktion feature in their respective artist residencies at LABoral this summer where they work on shaping their upcoming shows as they make use of the resources made available to the artists by the art centre.

LABoral’s programme for 2013 has been underpinned by strengthening the research and production of new work through artist residencies and work groups. LABoral invites artists and developers to utilise the space and technical resources available to them and it is within this framework that the residencies by these Asturian creators are placed.

Fasenuova
Roberto Lobo and Ernesto Avelino, who have worked together under the name Fasenuova for nearly a decade, started their residency at Gijón’s Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial last April. Over the next six months they will continue developing their Laboratorio Sonoro y Escénico [Sound and Stage Laboratory], a project underway at the Centre with the aim of creating a new show.

Over the course of the last six months of rehearsal, the Asturian industrial group has been prolifically active both in terms of its live performances and recordings. During this period the group has published a vinyl single with the Asturian record label Discos Humeantes and a 12", also in plastic, with remixes of one of the songs made by Legowelt, Gerald Donal and Marc Piñol, true living legends worldwide of dance music and released by the prestigious Barcelona-based label Hivern Discs.

The duo from Mieres are also forming collaborations with other artists who are developing their projects at LABoral, like the one orchestrated last 31 July with British artist Neil Beggs as part of the exhibition Traslaciones [Translations]. In addition, they will lead in the opening concert of the exhibition Aprendiendo de las Cuencas [Learning from the Cuencas] on 27 September.

Óscar Mulero & Fium
Meanwhile, Óscar Mulero & Fium have been working on Biolive, a live audiovisual set which will be presented on 5 October at the theatre of Gijón’s Ciudad de la Cultura [City of Culture]. In this performance, live music by Óscar Mulero in dialogue mode encounters the visual world, also produced live by the Fium collective, made up by Cristina de Silva and Nacho de la Vega.

Biolive is Óscar Mulero’s first live project as a producer outside of his career as a DJ. The sound of this piece aims to scrutinise the phenomenal character of reality. Yet, it could also be easily understood as a map of a personal cosmos formed by the explosion of different electronic universes in the experimental genre: from the textures of Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works with all those nuances that seem kind of familiar to us, to the cold and futuristic aesthetic of early Autechre and LFO with their disaffected beats.

Based on research on image models that represent different organic forms such as plants, various minerals and stones, the images by Fium draw a galloping narrative between analogue and digital formats that lead us from the smallest details to an overall picture composed of different topological cuts of the Asturian landscape. In this way, the images respond at all times to the sound. They talk, interact and connect to it through a live response defined by different harmonic interplays and synchronies while light also plays its part as a compositional element.  A group is formed, a complex system that governs the visual and sound as an organic whole reflecting the secret mechanics of our visual and sound perception.

Pablo Und Destruktion
Pablo G. Díaz, Pablo Und Destruktion will prepare his second LP during his artistic residency at LABoral and will accompany it with a compilation of texts in the form of a poetry book, and videos continuing with his already published Crónicas Asturpsicodélicas, which are like musical video-poems that travel through the limbic places that populate this region.

Pablo Und Destruktion has been working in music for several years and moulding his personal stamp which identifies him today. He was a member of Arroz and Silencio Oso until he chose to try out the solitary profile.  This experimental musician from Gijón stunned the Spanish independent music scene in 2012 with the release of his debut solo album Animal con Parachoques.

Over the last year, he has gone on tours in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Portugal, featuring in more than 100 concerts where he has played his songs which are marked by a radical and personal interpretation of contemporary Asturias.  He combines this activity with the controls of “Pauken: Grabaciones y Conspiraciones” and managing “Estudios Güelita”.
