LABoral celebrates International Museums Day with three open door days
The Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón will stay open until 3 o´clock in the early morning on Saturday 14th May to celebrate Museum Night

On the occasion of the celebration of International Museum Day 2011, under the slogan of ”Museum and Memory”, LABoral has organised a wide programme of free activities on Saturday 14th, Sunday 15th and Wednesday 18th May. The programme includes workshops, guided visits to the exhibitions and spaces which aren´t normally visited. In addition, on Saturday 14th, the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial [Centre of Art and Industrial Creation] will be the scene of Museum Night, with night-time activities that will last until two o´clock in the early morning.
Since 1977, the International Museum Day is celebrated all over the world on 18th May every year. From the American continent to Oceania passing through Europe, Asia and Africa, this international day for museums provides the occasion to raise awareness among the general public on the role of museums in the development of society.
In the programme organised by LABoral to commemorate this yearly event, it has been kept very much in mind the spirit that motivates it: “Museums are an important tool for cultural exchange, the enrichment of cultures and advances in mutual understanding, in cooperation and peace among peoples”.
The LABoral Art Centre demonstrates in this way its commitment to moving closer to the public and society and making it widely known the changes that museums bring about given they are –as expressed by the ICOM definition of what a museum is: “an institution at the service of society and its development”.
A BUS FOR THE MUSEUMS
Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May
To facilitate visits, la Fundación Municipal de Cultura, Educación y Universidad Popular del Ayuntamiento de Gijón [The Municipal Foundation of Culture, Education and Popular University of Gijón City Council], in collaboration with LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial [LABoral Centre of Art and Industrial Creation], Fundación Museo Evaristo Valle [Foundation and Museum Evaristo Valle] and Museo Barjola [the Barjola Museum], will run a special Gijón tourist bus service following a circular route around all the city’s museums with a bus stop at each of them. The journey is free and the bus arrival at each museum will have a guided visit or activity scheduled.
The bus leaves on its first trip at 10.30 am and will follow its circular route lasting approximately one hour and half. The itinerary begins in the Plaza del Marqués and continues through Museo del Ferrocarril de Asturias [the Railway Museum of Asturias], Parque Arqueológico-Natural de la Campa Torres [La Campa Torres Archaeological Natural Park], Villa Romana de Veranes [the Roman Villa of Romanes], LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial [LABoral Centre of Art and Industrial Creation], Fundación Museo Evaristo Valle, Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies [Museum of Asturian Peoples], Museo Nicanor Piñole [Nicanor Piñole Museum] and Plaza del Marqués (from which Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos [the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum], Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés [Roman Baths of Campo Valdés] and Museo Barjola [Barjola Museum] can all be visited).
People taking advantage of this route will be able to plan their own itinerary around the city’s museums thanks to the information provided for them by the bus service itself. It is important to bear in mind the timetables of both the bus trips and also of the opening and closing times of the different museums.

9 pm. Presentation of the winners and finalists of the Poetry prize for the Haikús Eléctricos [Electric Haikus] contest
Sofía Castañón and Juan Tizón make up the Asturian production company Sr. Paraguas which has visually interpreted the poems into visual haikus. Both will also feature in a poetry performance event.

10 pm. Santi Balmés in an acoustic performance
Santi Balmés is the voice, guitar and keyboards of the group Love of Lesbian, a band whose trajectory goes back to 1988. They have performed in the most important festivals on the peninsula and are considered, both by the public and critics, as one of the most relevant groups on the national pop scene.

Klaus & Kinski in concert
Klaus & Kinski, a music group formed in Murcia. To date they have released two studio albums and an extended play, which they have performed at various festivals.

- Behind the Scenes visits, with guided tours around the exhibitions and the warehouses, workshops and laboratories under the guidance of the mediation team at LABoral.
- Light Painting Workshop. Light painting is a photographic technique in which a drawing or several are produced using a source of moving light or the movement of the camera around the source.
- Blue Magic (Cyanotypes workshop). Cyanotype is an old monochrome photographic procedure which obtains a copy in blue, called cyanotype. This process called ferroprusiate is used widely in the copying of architectural plans. The workshop deals with photography, learning, technique, fun, use, material and image.
- Orbitando satélites [Orbiting Satellites] Presentation and Connection with Moscow
Saturday, 7 pm. Plataforma Cero
Public presentation of the research by national and international experts, artists and musicians carried out to critically deal with the diverse practices, politics and techniques of satellites. During this meeting, the participants have embarked on the design and construction of a vehicle and suborbital laboratory, which will be launched this coming July to coincide with the exhibition in which the results of this research process will be presented to the public. In addition, the results from the work will be shown via streaming in a real-time connection with Moscow. This will see LABoral taking part in La Noche Blanca [a sleepless night] in Moscow which commemorates International Museum Day and is celebrated world-wide.
Wednesday 18th May
11 am. Presentation of LABsocial_Club
LABsocial_Club is an audiovisual map of the sensations, feelings and opinions of elderly people living in Asturias. The project has been carried out in collaboration with Fundación Municipal de Servicios Sociales del Ayuntamiento de Gijón [Municipal Foundation of Social Services, Gijón City Council] and has been initiated in the city’s different elderly homes.
Its name was inspired by the famous documentary Buena Vista Social Club by the German film director Wim Wenders who visited Cuba in 1998 to bear witness to the latest recordings and concerts of some of the best musicians who lived on in the island in the 20th century.
In this case, the music is put on by the sound artist Juanjo Palacios who accompanies elderly people along a series of “sensorial” walks through different neighbourhoods in Asturias, aimed at looking, listening and understanding the environment in which they live. Their personal lives – their memories, longings, desires and sorrows are used to configurate a type of map of the longest living people, which for us means so much as the words History and Knowledge.

With the participation of: Juanjo Palacios: sound/phonographic artist and the person responsible for the sonorous walks; Iván Tobalina, trained in audiovisual communication and philosophy, has been in charge of producing the videos and conducting the interviews; the Fundación de Servicios Sociales del Ayuntamiento de Gijón [the Municipal Foundation for Social Servicesof Gijón City Council; and members of various elderly centres – the protagonists of LABsocial_Club.

The exhibition, conceived by Musée National d’Art Moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou, in collaboration with LABoral, shows the continuity that exists between firework displays and the art of moving images by using the visual resources of pyrotechnics. Noches eléctricas begins with a series of classical French etchings representing fireworks, as well as a group of photographs by Brassaï, Claude Closky, André Kertész, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Dora Maar. All of this gives way to a selection of experimental films and contemporary works by Brion Gysin, Ange Leccia, Ana Mendieta and Yoko Ono, among others.

This selection of Works drawn from the archives of Move on Asia aims at offering a perspective on the profuse production of Works in video art in the Pacific Rim, as well as its diversity in scope. Initiated in 2004 by Jinsuk Suh, Director of Alternative Space Loop in Seoul, Move on Asia celebrated its fifth edition in 2010. The programme consists of a presentation of works in video and animation, selected each year by a different team of Asian curators, and includes artists from such countries as Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

EL ALQUIMISTA IMPASIBLE Y SU CINE DE FANTASÍA. SEGUNDO DE CHOMÓN [The Impassive Alchemist and His Fantasy Cinema]

The exhibition pays a tribute to experimental and independent cinema. Segundo de Chomón (Teruel, 1871- París, 1929) was one of the first directors of silent movies. A pioneer of Spanish cinema, his vast imagination was focused entirely on developing the new medium. The exhibition includes some of De Chomón’s best films: Le plongeur fantastique [Diver Fantasy], La maison ensorcelée [The House of Ghosts], Le spectre rouge [The Red Spectre], El hotel eléctrico [The Electric Hotel], Voyage sur Jupiter [A Trip to Jupiter], Une excursión incoherente [Traveler’s Nightmare] and Le troubadour [The Troubadour]. These are accompanied by music composed expressly by Juan Prieto [Akasha] y Roberto Lorenzo [Rob Loren], as well as the report, Cinematógrafo 1900. The work produced by Roberto Lorenzo in tribute to the film director will also be shown entitled Las palomas de Chomón [Les Colombes de Chomón] [De Chomón’s Doves] (2010-2011). It is a visual piece (4’55”) with images taken from the gardens at the Louvre Museum in Paris -a place where the film director would habitually go for a stroll- accompanied by the soundtrack of the Asturian artist.

ADRIÁN CUERVO. DÉDALO ESPAÑA
When a multinational corporation does not want to talk with the client, it creates a labyrinth
Dédalo España is an exhibition project physically and conceptually exploring the labyrinths created by multinational corporations to deal with clients, or in this case the public. Dédalo España is a corporation created expressly for this purpose, using the communication strategies of real companies, yet concentrated and amplified. "Visit our new headquarters, it’s an unforgettable experience". The work includes an installation, audiovisuals, corporate identity and a web page.

CARMEN CANTÓN. CREAR BOSQUES [CREATING FORESTS]
Science Technology and Animals Nature
Crear bosques [Creating Forests] (Piñera, Asturias 1996–2011) is a participative art action, representing a monument and at once a society. The action consists of the compilation of sponsorship applications, while the management of the action – with the key involvement of museums, art centres, collectives and NGOs– and the actual planting returns to object hood inasmuch as the transformation into a location map that allows sponsors to visit their tree should they so wish. To date, a number of actions have been carried out in Asturias and Galicia in Spain, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Germany, among other countries.
