The programme for 2014 of the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón has been designed with the dual purpose of extending the networks of talent and knowledge while fostering a new economic dynamic for the institution. To achieve this, LABoral will strengthen:
- Production activities, through calls for residencies, inviting artists and developers to produce new works which will be subsequently exhibited in the halls at the art centre or shown to the public in presentations and workshops in which the creators will present the result of their work.
- Research continuing with the exploration of new formats which can be a channel for creative thinking and new creative forms which arise from the creative use of new technologies.
- Education, with a threefold purpose: to bring closer creative languages and the most contemporary artistic proposals, fostering critical awareness in the use of new technologies and providing key knowledge on new artistic and cultural productions.
- Companies in residence programme offering a space to young entrepreneurs interested in developing a closer relationship with the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and its activities.
The two great exhibitions of the year will establish a framework for related activities in all the areas of activity at the Centre which rest on four fundamental pillars: digital design and fabrication, experimental electronics and software, data visualization and the moving image.

Datascape

The exhibition Datascape shows a panorama of creation spanning the last ten years, with a number of specific productions and some updated works which, as a whole, demonstrate an ongoing reflection on this genre of landscape in art which new technologies now incorporate as a language.

A Screaming Comes Across the Sky
This show deals with the moral and ethical implications of "war at a distance" and explores growing military technology, invisible and seemingly unproblematic, yet responsible for the disappearance of hundreds of civilians every year in wars that are, for the most part, carried out in secret without any explanation.
A Screaming Comes Across the Sky examines the work of contemporary artists who criticise the way in which military technology and networks can cover up, hide and keep us apart from the political and social reality of contemporary war.

Universo vídeo 2014
During 2014 LABoral will continue with Universo vídeo [Video Universe], a research line into video begun in 2011. This year’s plans are to consolidate the collaboration with other institutions and the relationship between the exhibition space and various archives and collections.
Ranging from Asturian artists to well established names, as those which make up the Lemaître collection, including filmmakers working midway between visual arts and the cinema institution, the exhibition series Universo vídeo explores as yet non-canonical channels which, however, conform the body of practices which are no longer marginal and have become part of our cultural industry, such as television or, video games, where the animation which can be seen on display plays a vital role.
The aim is to show content which allows us to critically approach the world of the image. Something which necessarily leads to generating a discourse able to act as a driving force for audiovisual didactics, which would seem increasingly necessary.

Universo vídeo. Geo-políticas [Geopolitics]: a selection of works by artists from the Asturian Artists’ Archive
The artists participating in this show demonstrate through different representation means how the figure which is, in principle, a purely objective fact, devoid of implications, carries a historical sense of being and existing in the world. All of them are part of the Asturian Artists’ Archive at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, which was launched in 2010 and has already brought together 150 creators from the region.

Universo vídeo. The Magic of Images, a selection from the collection of Isabelle and Jean-Conrad Lemaître
The videos from the collection of Jean-Conrad and Isabelle Lemaître form one of the best known selections of video art in Europe, which includes works by artists from more than 33 countries. The Lemaître collection focuses on recent artists who produce videos under different premises in Europe and the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, offering the public a multicultural appreciation which is closely associated with contemporary video art.

DKV Seguros-Álvarez Margaride Production Grant
The objective of this yearly call is to award a production residency for the completion of a project by artists who are either Spanish or legally resident in Spain and who were born in 1972 or later. The results from the residency, to take place between April and June, will be presented in an exhibition at LABoral which will be held in the Galería de Exposiciones [Exhibitions Gallery] from 21 June to 14 September 2014. The resulting work from the residency will be acquired for the collection of DKV Seguros, the co-producer of the piece.
This call pays homage to José Luis Álvarez Margaride, a native of Gijón and president of the Spanish subsidiary of DKV Seguros until his death in 2010, for his commitment to business in Asturias and his interest in art, culture and scientific research.

Colección olorVISUAL
There are different ways of collecting, and none can be said to be better than any other. It’s good to start collecting in your own good time, but knowing what you want. In the case of the Olor Visual [Visual Odour] Collection, there is a very clear guideline: the object in question must “give off” an odour in order to become part of the collection. It need not do so physically, of course, but it must evoke an olfactory memory for the collector.
LABoral will organise a call for the production of a work by an emerging artist. Following the production residency, the work will be exhibited in relation to other pieces from the olorVISUAL Collection of Ernesto Ventós.

LABjoven_Experimenta
LABjoven_Experimenta is the most firmly established production programme at the art centre, on account of its longevity – it will hold its seventh edition in 2014 – and also its direct link with the local context. Its goal is the production of experimental artistic projects (installations, actions, interventions and any other creative reflection), particularly conceived for its exhibition in the space at LABoral. The call is aimed at artists either born or resident in Asturias and was conceived as a specific programme to support and stimulate the Asturian scene.
Over the course of its six editions, the award’s provisions and the production facilities at the Production Centre have made it possible to complete ambitious projects of varying nature which were presented at LABoral and afterwards travelled to other spaces in the country.

Universo vídeo. Guillermo G. Peydró
Guillermo G. Peydró (Madrid, 1981), winner of the award Universo vídeo [Video Universe], bestowed by LABoral and the Gijón International Film Festival as part of the FICXLAB activities, will produce a short film during this residency which will be premiered at Gijón International Film Festival in 2014. The artist proposes to enter into relationship with the city with his camera, drawing from his perspective as an art historian and filmmaker.

Tótem De Datos. Producción y Vigor Biológicos, Enrique Radigales
Tótem de Datos [Totem of Data] plans to visualise the biological production of a geographical object: Pericastó. Throughout the growing season, its biological cycles are examined throughout the one-year long growing period, which are represented by twelve columns of adobe bricks, one column for each month and as many bricks as vegetable species. The artist Enrique Radigales will enjoy a two-week residency at LABoral and the results of his work will be shown in the exhibition Datorama.

II DKV Seguros-Álvarez Margaride Production Grant
The aim of this second call, held every year, is to award a production residency for the completion of a project by an artist who is either Spanish or legally resident in Spain, born in 1972 or after. The residency lasts two months and the results will be presented in an exhibition at LABoral.

Next Things 2014-Personal
The third Global Art and Technology Challenge Next Things 2014 – Personal pursues innovative and breakthrough ideas on the Internet of Things in the context of art and technology. This edition will focus at the personal level, trying to go beyond the implications of Personal Data, understood strictly as data and software. The artists will enjoy a two-month artist fellowship and the results will be presented at LABoral and Telefónica I+D [R&D]

Residency for technological research and art project development with drone technology
Following on from research carried out in Plataforma 0. Production Centre at LABoral, the development of open source drone technology will be continued. This technology will be used in the development of a new production artistic project, which will be part of the exhibition A Screaming Comes Across the Sky.
Proposals which may be submitted:
- Exclusively for technological development: residency of 6 weeks
- Exclusively for artistic production: residency of 8 weeks
- Project including technological development and artistic production: residence of 12 weeks
An expert jury will decide whether to select two separate proposals (development and artistic production) or a single one which combines both dimensions.

Sound Laboratory
The Sound Laboratory aims to promote and provide technical and creative support to all artistic practices related to contemporary sound art through three main lines of action: production, research and education.
Research and production residencies, exhibitions, workshops, concerts or performances in which sound is the key element will take place in this space.

Working with design allows for knowledge mobilization and transfer in different fields and the possibility to integrate them according to each student’s own learning basis of each student’s own learning and in the classroom or educational centre context. 2. TVLAB. Experimental television laboratory
TV-LAB is a communication platform and an experimental television set which examines conventional broadcasting and investigates alternative ways of watching and making television.
Participants learn about communication languages and resources by “appropriating” them, reevaluating broadcasting as a creative communication tool. At the same time, a more critical approach to using the communications media is fostered.

3. Introduction to Creative Programming
This objective of this programme is to provide students with the foundations for understanding the workings of digital technology, which has become so prevalent in their lives, and also offer a more creative vision in the use of this technology.
The programme combines the learning of concepts and basic processes with hands-on practice in the “creative use of technology” with Twitter and Scratch.

Introductory course to fabrication processes based on 2D designs. Participants will gain an introduction to vector design and CAD, and work with different fabrication techniques using laser cutting, milling and vinyl cutting.

These workshops aim to introduce the young and adult public to the world of digital fabrication and experimental electronics through the fabrication and assembling of model airplanes. The workshop approach to education adheres to concepts such as fabricate-use-repair-use as opposed to buy-use-throw away.

Workshop on building multicopters (UAVs, drones) applying digital fabrication techniques and experimental electronics
Participants in this workshop will work on the fabrication and the setting up of flight platforms together with the more theoretical aspects relating to electronic systems for autonomous navigation. The activity is part of TheDrone, an internal line of research at LABoral’s Production Centre, based on the use of electronics and open source software for the fabrication and design of automated flying devices. The workshop is completed with two series of workshops on aeromodelling for amateurs.

- music production: audio editing, musical production and mastering.

MapaSONORU
mapaSONORU is a project created in 2009 by Juanjo Palacios which aims to awaken an interest in soundscape, attentive listening and field recordings. One of its goals is to put draw up a sound map of Asturias. On the third Saturday of each month the field recordings are made and on the fourth Saturday of each month, the technical session follows.

Mediation Programme
In the area of education, LABoral serves as a space for artistic research by training and the spreading of knowledge with the ultimate aim of fostering areas of critical participation based around the key issues in contemporary society.
The Centre’s Mediation team provides the opportunity for groups and associations to arrange to attend workshops and guided visits to its exhibitions free of charge. The contents of the visits and workshops are adapted to the needs of the participants.

Aprendiendo de las Cuencas
Aprendiendo de las Cuencas [Learning from the Cuencas] is a research project which aims to offer a new gaze on the cultural landscape of the Cuencas or coal mining areas of central Asturias and which feature in an exhibition with twin venues: LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón and the Exhibition Hall at SabadellHerrero in Oviedo.
The show Aprendiendo de las Cuencas. Artefactos de la memoria [Artefacts of Memory] at the SabadellHerrero exhibition hall showcases a cross-section of the documentation and cataloguing carried out during the research process. The exhibition content is based on a study of 40 of the most outstanding artifacts identified in this territory. The reflection is expanded at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in a dreamlike speculation based on the contents of the research process divided into three categories: spectres, projections and fantasies.

Winning Project of LABjoven_Experimenta
Inercia [Inertia] is the winning project of LABjoven_Experimenta, the joint call for proposals by LABoral and the Instituto Asturiano de la Juventud [Asturian Youth Institute], aimed at artists or collectives born or resident in Asturias, aged 35 or under. This award, which now celebrates its sixth edition, is dedicated to experimental artistic projects specifically conceived for its exhibition at LABoral Centro de Arte.
According to the artist, Inercia alludes to the actual physics definition of inertia, which is the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of rest or motion, and relates to the disturbances in various European countries in the wake of the Euro financial crisis, most notably in Greece and Spain. The work is an installation structured around three elements: the re-editing of the film Streets of Fire (1984), directed by Walter Hill; videogames, first-person shooter ones; and a series of moulds based on the Jhon-117 character in the Halo video game.

Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español [Video Universe_the alternative Spanish audiovisual scene]
This exhibition features works by artists from the PLAT audiovisual platform/archive, an online film archive of independent Spanish cinema as well as a self-run platform for audiovisual dissemination and research with free access to its contents.
Over and above any external discourse about how to orchestrate the works, the show wishes to cast light on the latest trends in audiovisual creation by paying attention to works which somehow speak for themselves.
Furthermore, the show has a competitive edge to it. As part of the Gijon International Film Festival (FICX), a prize will be presented to one of the participants in the exhibition, consisting of a two-week production residency at LABoral. The winner will be announced at FICX in 2014.

crear bosques [creating forests] (Piñera, Asturias 1996–2011) is a participative art action, representing a monument and at once a society. The action consists of the compilation of sponsorship applications, the management of the action –with the key involvement of museums, art centres, collectives and NGOs– and the planting, reverting to an objectual format by its transformation into a location map that allows sponsors to visit their tree should they so wish.
