LABoral will celebrate with its audiences the 5th anniversary
- Limited edition T-shirts
Íñigo Bilbao, Santiago Lara, Daniel Acevedo, Javier Bejarano and Señor X have been selected to design the limited edition T-shirts which will be produced by LABoral to celebrate its fifth anniversary. The Centre of Art and Industrial Production launched this call for the production of a series of five T-shirts, of limited edtion, which had to be designed by creators included in the Asturian Artists´Archive at LABoral. With an open subject matter, 200 units of each one of the five selected designs will be produced.

- Signing of the agreement with Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Barcelona [Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia] (IAAC) for the incorporation of fabLAB Asturias in the Worldwide Network of digital fabrication laboratories. A strategic agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
fabLAB ASTURIAS is a space for research, training and production using advanced digital fabrication equipment to create real and virtual prototypes. The lab at LABoral, which was opened in December 201o with financial aid provided by Alcoa, is one of 50 operating throughout Spain and the world. This agreement propels the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation in terms of its production as a standard of excellence, and places it in an environment of international creativity and new productive models which support its activity.
Attending the event will be: Sherry Lassiter, Program Manager of MIT’s Fab Labs worldwide network; Antoni Nicolau, Director of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Tomás Díez, Programme Coordinator of the Fab Academy programme, offered by the world network of Fab Labs.

1st edition: from 12th to 22nd March
2nd edition: from 14th to 24th May
The introduction course to digital fabrication in fabLAB aims to introduce the participants to design and the most advanced digital fabrication processes, focusing on the design, development and construction of prototypes on a 1/20 scale in different types of materials. Special analysis will be given to the steps in the change from computer model to the creation of each prototype.

- Inauguration: Ryoji Ikeda. Datamatics. data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version]
data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version] is a Project specifically adapted to the monumental scale of the Projects’ Room at LABoral. In this huge audiovisual installation, Ryoji Ikeda offers the visitor a fully immersive and sensorial experience. The projection of a single and large video image directly onto the floor of the big exhibition space using five projectors submerges the spectator’s body, vision and hearing. The renowned Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda centres his work on the essential parts of sound and visual elements, such as light, by making use of both mathematical precision and aesthetics. Ikeda has built a reputation as one of the few international creators who operates convincingly with visual and sound media, elaborately combining sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical concepts in immersive live performances and installations.

This project by LABoral, developed in collaboration with the artist and phonographist Juanjo Palacios, is aimed at making a sound map of Asturias based on field recordings which are later geolocated as audio files on an interactive map. In each session, work is carried out across the board with phonography, sound landscaping and other tools associated with these disciplines and, in addition, there will be sessions focusing on the creation of micros in the fabLAB at LABoral.

- Inauguration (ende). A documentary series by Luis Argeo and Ramón Lluís Bande
(ende) is an audiovisual documentary project which has arisen from a journey and a road map. It, in turn, generates new maps and new journeys. (ende) comprises a collection of film portraits of different people, randomly selected during a voyage, who live in areas which in some way represent a border; they mark a frontier. In this way, (ende) leads to a series of reflections on the concepts of territory and cultural and social transformations that can be seen in the piece during its short trips.

- Work Group: Videojuego [Videogame]
LABoral builds on its line of work with video games, the highpoint of which took place in the Gameworld, Playware and Homo Ludens Ludens exhibitions, which included this discipline in an art centre for the first time in Spain. With the project by Miriam Ruiz, the Centre now sets in motion a work group which is centred on the creation, technical development and socio-educational role played by video games. Its basic goal is to encourage creativity and foster a space for exchanging knowledge and analyzing the language in video games. This proposal is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 18 years-old, and the activities will take place weekly until December.

- Paula Pin. Concierto fotosintético [Photosynthetic Concert]
The artist Paula Pin presents the work she has been developing during her residency at Plataforma 0. Production Centre. Concierto fotosintético [Photosynthetic Concert] researches into bio-sensing devices and physiological interfaces in order to create new ways of representing technological interactions between the natural forces and elements, humans, animals and plants. This project received the Artistic Production Incentive award of the Vida 13.2, Art and Artificial Life International Awards, held by Fundación Telefónica [Telefonica Foundation], in its 2011 edition.

- Inauguration Visualizar el sonido [Visualising Sound]
This exhibition explores the synthesis between image and sound, the different graphical and physical representations of sound, and its evolution in the context of contemporary art. It charts a course of the most representative artists and pieces of the last decade, also focusing on "visual music" experiments by artists from the beginning of the last century. Visualizar el sonido [Visualising Sound] originated in the idea of generating dialogue among all of the pieces that make up the exhibition, spanning a century of creation based on the same idea or concept: to dominate the wave, represent and tame it; the need to go beyond the place where our senses have brought us, which is, after all, the essence of all art.

- Concert at LABoral. With the presentation of Rapsodia [Rhapsody] by Fernando Gutiérrez + .Tape. and a live audiovisual piece by one of the artists in the Visualizar el sonido exhibition: David Letellier, under the name of Kangding Ray, who presents OR a/v live set.
Rapsodia. Halfway between interactive animation and generative art, Rapsodia -a work in the Golondrias series- aims to reconstruct a lost arcadia in a playful, innocent and perverse way which invades the exhibition space and immerses the public in a strange ecosystem.
Kangding Ray. Born in France, he currently lives and works between Berlin and Paris. A graduate in architecture whose creative work encompasses different fields such as music, performances and installations, Kangding Ray is situated at the crossroads between “digitalism” and a certain pop sensibility. In his compositions melodies are subtlety mixed with sounds generated by machines in a kind of rhythmic suite. He skillfully combines guitar loops, bass lines, residual noise, acoustic instruments and digital anomalies to create a varied textured soundscape.

- Workshop on new narrative models with Helena Torres
Serendipia [Serendipity] by Helena Torres is a work based on locative audio and its narrative possibilities, produced by LABoral following its selection as part of the Narrativas espaciales [Spatial Narratives] programme, promoted by Plataforma 0. Production Centre in collaboration with SAT-Société des Arts Technologiques [Society for Arts and Technology] in Montreal, No Tours (Vigo) and GPSmuseum (Murcia). By means of a sound walk, Helena Torres intends to solve a crime committed in Gijón at the end of the nineteenth century, which seeks to transport the passers-by into the political, social and historical climate of the beginning of the modern age.
During the different sessions of the workshop, the artist will work with students of audiovisual communication from the Instituto de Educación Secundaria [Secondary School] of Laboral University (Gijón) on new narrative models, and through the use of technological tools, she will introduce them to geo-locating techniques.

- Presentation of the work Serendipia [Serendipity] by Helena Torres
A stroll around the civil cemetery in Ceares so as to experience the proposal by Helena Torres in Serendipia. The artist has used notours, an application for intelligent telephones that enables users to locate sound on a google map, and subsequently, in the exploration of the chosen place, the GPS localisation transforms the movement through space into a sound drift.

- El arte y su sonido [Art and its Sounds]
This project by José Manuel Costa, framed within the Visualizar el sonido exhibition, in collaboration with Juanjo Palacios, is aimed at something quite unusual: to capture the sound of an art centre. And yet, centres and museums, when compared to almost any other space whether it be ordinary or exotic, are characterized by their silence; neither accepting nor generating sound. But they are spaces with their own sound settings, their echoes, reverberations, unrecognized, almost hidden micro-sounds…
In this first session, the art critic and curator José Manuel Costa presents the project and leads a theoretical session, which will be followed by a roundtable discussion on sound art with the artists and curators in the exhibition, and artists participating in the project.

Research and Artistic Phenomena
This exhibition presents the work by 28 international artists and collectives, whose reason for work is an irrepressible impulse which connects them to the purest part of scientific research. Steering away from pre-established guidelines in contemporary art, these creators share in their work a certain fascination for extra-artistic themes, not only for what happens in the field of reality but also in the beyond.

- Lorena Lozano. Danza infinita [Infinite Dance]
Selected in the proposal call for Grants for Production 2011 by the Projects Office, Danza infinita explores the ways in which biological sciences pursue the desire for immortality and life beyond death, revealed in an installation which includes the staging of a clinical trial and a dance rehearsal. This work intends to open up reflection on politics, body and property rights and advances in medical and biological research while also paying tribute to Henrietta Lacks, an Afro-American woman born in the United States, who before her death in 1951 had cells removed from her body without her consent for biomedical research.

- Narrativas espaciales [Spatial Narratives]
This exhibit brings together the results from the workshop which took place at the beginning of November in which writers, digital producers and sound artists joined efforts at LABoral to work on locative audio projects. It additionally includes three European projects on locative media developed at Hangar, Barcelona The participants used the different technical resources available, experimented with script writing, worked with audio files and created projects with which to experiment. The exhibition now presents to the public the ten sound walks generated from the noTours platform of Escoitar.org, which can be carried out in the vicinity of the Art Centre using a mobile with the Android operating system.

- crear bosques [creating forests]
crear bosques (Piñera, Asturias 1996–2011) is a participative art action, representing a monument and at once a society. The action consists of the compilation of sponsorship applications, the management of the action -with the key involvement of museums, art centres, collectives and NGOs- and the planting, reverting to an objectual format by its transformation into a location map that allows sponsors to visit their tree should they so wish.
